Project Spotlight: The Versatile Heirloom Bookcases
Handcrafted Brown Maple Units Designed for Scale and Portability
The Vision: The client requested a matching pair of grand bookcases to flank their fireplace and accentuate the room's high ceilings. However, there was a unique requirement: the units needed to be "future-proof." The client wanted pieces that would command the current space but remain adaptable and suitable for a home with standard-height ceilings should they move in the future.
The Craftsmanship: For these pieces, we selected Brown Maple, a hardwood known for its strength and exceptionally smooth surface, making it the ideal substrate for a premium painted finish. To ensure the bookcases remain a lifetime investment, we engineered them with a structural center stile. This design element provides superior vertical support, preventing the shelves from sagging or the units from twisting over time.
The Fine Details:
Adaptive Shelving: To accommodate a changing collection, we integrated a fully adjustable shelving system. The client has total freedom to reconfigure the interior layout to fit everything from tall art volumes to smaller decorative accents.
Closed-Base Storage: The lower portion of each unit features closed storage, providing a clean, "hidden" space for items not intended for display, maintaining a clutter-free aesthetic in the room.
Intentional Scale: By designing the units with a sophisticated, tiered profile, we allowed them to capitalize on the home’s vertical height while maintaining a classic proportion that would feel right at home in a variety of architectural settings.
